MONK, ITALY. - Monasticsm primarily meant the state of dwelling alone; and then, by an easy and natural transition, it came to denote a life of poverty, celibacy and divine obedience under fixed rules of discipline. The radical idea of the term, in all its varieties of age, creed and country, is the same, namely, retirement from society in search of some ideal life, which society cannot supply, but which is thought attainable by self-denial and withdrawl from the world. Mano Poderosa
This very fine 19th century retablo represents "La Mano Poderosa," or "The Powerful Hand" - also sometimes referred to as "Los Cinco Personas," a reference to the Extended Holy Family in the upper quadrant. The five figures at the top represent Anne, Mary, Baby Jesus, Joseph and Joachim. In the lower quadrant, blood is flowing from the stigmata into an open gold chalice which is received by the seven sacrificial lambs below. An all around great 19th century folk retablo with layers of symbolic imagery and allegory throughout! Dimensions: 14 inches x 10 inches.

San Camilo de Lelis

This rare 19th century folk retablo depicts "San Camilo de Lelis," often referred to as the "Red Cross Saint." San Camilo, patron saint of the sick and nurses, is almost always depicted as he is here, ministering at the hour of death. In almost every example of this subject, San Camilo is shown with small devils and angels, each said to be competing for the dyeing man's departing soul. 10 inches x 7 inches.

This ad or others like it were found in the Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine during the 1960s. The back pages of that publication (the abnormal brainchild of Forrest J. Ackerman, the original fanboy) were filled with ads for all kinds of curios and grotesqueries offered mail order from the Philadelphia-based outfit Captain Company.

The Skull of the Smoking Mirror

This mask is believed to represent the god Tezcatlipoca, one of the Aztec creator gods. He was also the god of rulers, warriors and sorcerers. His name can be translated as ‘Smoking Mirror’. In fact, in many depictions during the Postclassic period (A.D. 900/1000-1521) his foot is replaced by a mirror.

The base for this mask is a human skull. The eyes are made of two discs of iron pyrites set in rings made of shell. The back of the skull has been cut away and lined with leather. The jaw is movable and hinged on the leather.

In Yorùbá religion, Ṣàngó ( also spelled, Sango or Shango, often known as Xangô or ChangóJakuta^[1]) is perhaps the most popular Orisha; he is a Sky Father, god of thunder and lightning. Sango was a royal ancestor of the Yoruba as he was the fourth king of the Oyo Kingdom. In the Lukumí (O lukumi = "my friend") religion of the Caribbean, Shango is considered the center point of the religion as he represents the Oyo people of West Africa. The Oyo Kingdom was sacked and pillaged as part of a jihad by the Islamic Sokoto Caliphate. All the major initiation ceremonies (as performed in Cuba, PuertoShangoOyo. This ceremony survived the Middle Passage and is considered to be the most complete to have arrived on Western shores. This variation of the Yoruba initiation ceremony became the basis of all Orisha initiations in the West. in Latin America and the Caribbean, and also known as Rico and Venezuela for the last few hundred years) are based on the traditional ceremony of Ancient

The energy given from this Deity of Thunder is also a major symbol of African resistance against an enslaving European culture. He rules the color red and white; his sacred number is 6; his symbol is the oshe (double-headed axe), which represents swift and balanced justice. His dominance is over male sexuality and human vitality, in general. He is owner of the Bata (3 double-headed drums), as well as the Arts of Music, Dance and Entertainment. Shango can be deduced, in some regards, to be the essence of "strategy" (logic and passion drawn and fashioned precisely to achieve some end).

The ceramic vessel, from the other end of the Peruvian time scale, the Inca period just before the spanish conquest, is an extraordinary example of virtuosity. The double- chambered container has two spouts, one bird, a llama-like head and a jaguar, or its skin, sprawls over the top of the container.

Wool and cotton poncho from the Chancay valley near Limaon the central coast of Peru ( A.D. 1000 - 1450). A confronted and rampant feline appears on each side of the wearer's chest and back, while similar felines make up the border

The relief forms on the bottle from Tembladera in the Jequtapeque Valley North Coast Peru, show a small feline head terminating a stylized feathered serpent. A fairly common theme in the art of Late Chavin period (700 - 500 B.C.), it is a forerunner of many uses of this combination in Precolumbian art.
